Events held during the European-wide Action Week against Racism 2012:
Friday, 23rd of March 2012:
In collaboration with the Committee of Equal Rights of the University of Iceland's Student Council, we threw a concert during lunch time at the University of Iceland. The multicultural band Retro Stefson performed before a huge audience and people were saying they had never seen so many people at the main University square at the same time. People were throwing their hands up in the air and dancing against racism. Employees of the Icelandic Human Rights Centre along with the members of the Equal Rights Committee wore t-shirts with the 2012 logo especially designed for this purpose and we all distributed brochures containing information about racism, discrimination, hate speech etc. The concert was a success and people learned about the purpose of the European wide-Action Week.
In collaboration with the Icelandic Red Cross, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of
Iceland and ÍTR (Neighborhood Youth associations of the city of Reykjavík), around 100 of participants at the age of 13-19 joined and helped spread the message about racism and discrimination. They all wore the special t-shirt, distributed the brochures and talked to people about racism in Smáralind which is one of the two biggest shopping mall in Iceland. There were a lot of activities for people to enjoy as well such as a game of "Human Rights Twister", look at photographs from the Polish Association of Photographers in Iceland, make their mark on the finger-artwork, participate in the wheel of fortune where you could get a hug, treat, education on racism or a compliment. Four groups entertained for us at Smáralind and we had a famous comedian and writer introduce the acts and make jokes about racism, stereotypes and discrimination.
